In my decades of studying polyamory in the United States I have seen the locus of research shift from the discipline of sociology (pretty much just me for the first 10 years) to psychology, and the Task Force on Consensual NonMonogamy is both a symptom of this shift and a significant driver. As a section of the American Psychological Association, Division 44 focuses on sexual orientation and gender diversity. The Consensual NonMonogamy Task Force is a subsection of Division 44 that utilizes an interdisciplinary team of more than 80 researchers, educators, and community leaders to investigate CNM relationships and make the findings available to clinicians. I am the co-chair of the Legal Issues Committee of the Task Force.
